Jan Mertl vs Oscar Hernandez by Bulan20
R.1 in Szczecin Challenger between Mertl and Oscar Otte (not Hernandez).
Mertl is a veteran player, 33 y.o and on his 13th year as pro. Ranked 205 and primarily plays at CH-level.
Haven´t had the best results on CH tour and often struggles getting through the first round. Have a 24/25 record this year and 10/14 on clay. Played qualifiers to US Open, won q1 against Sarkissian and then lost against Karatsev.
Played the Seville CH last week where he lost in 3 sets against Cipolla (#420). Is dependant on his serve to work, but have some decent basline qualities.
Oscar Otte, 22 y.o German, #512. Plays on the ITF-tour, mostly in or around Germany. Has a nice record 35/10 this year with 30/8 on clay. Most recent results come from ITF Belgium and Netherlands. In Belgium he won against Furness (#1469) and Altmaler (#961) before losing to Vliegen (#690). At the end of August he played in Netherlands losing in R.1 against Sakharov, #390.
Young vs veteran, CH vs ITF. Mertl is a poor CH-level player, even so there is a big gap in playing ITF and CH. Mertl played an ITF in his homecountry and went to the final back in July. He is more experienced and plays against stronger opponents on regular basis. Otte have a nice record and some ITF titles this year so he has some qualities. He have had a dip in form lately with some poor results after his title in the beginning of August.
Ranking doesn´t matter that much here but I think form and the fact that Mertl plays consistent at higher level will. Played each other last year on clay and Mertl won 6-2 6-1. Otte of course has a solid chance, but I think Mertl would win this matchup more than half of the times. Going with Mertl for the win.
