Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Stefan Struve by Joshboy
This fight will take place at ufc 190 and will be contested at the HSBC arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Stefan "the skyscraper" Struve is 27 years old and stands 7ft tall and has a reach of 84.5inches. He has a record of 25 wins and 7 losses and he made is debut in 2005. Stefan weighed in for this fight at 265lbs . Stefan is a black belt in kickboxing and a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He is the tallest man in the ufc and he is a well rounded fighter that can finish the fight on the feet or on the ground. He has good striking offense and mixes his strikes up well. He also hits quite hard and has 7 wins by Ko. His striking defence though is quite poor especially considering his height and reach advantage on all opponents. The thing is he has these advantages but he doesn't move his feet much so his opponents are able to get in range quite easily. His chin isn't the best and he has lost 6 of his 7 losses by Ko. His wrestling is probably his weak point if he has one. His wrestling offense isn't the best but he does have some serviceable takedown defense. On the ground he is very good and has 16 wins by submission. This is where he uses his height and length a lot more effectively. It must be mentioned that he is coming into this fight off of 2 Ko losses to Alistair Overeem and Mark Hunt. He has though changed his camp for this fight and has been training at the blackzilians camp in Florida with striking coach Henry Hooft so we could some improvements in his game, but it is impossible however to improve your ability to take a punch.
Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira is 39 years old and stands 6ft 3in tall and has a reach of 77 inches. "Big Nog" weighed in at 240lbs for this fight. He has a record of 34 wins and 9 losses with 1 draw. Nogueira is a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and has a black belt in Judo. Nogueira is an all time legend in this sport. He has some of the most memorable fights in all of mma and he is a hero to a lot of people in Brazil. His striking offense is good but he isn't versatile and pretty much just uses boxing. His boxing is effective though and his technique seems to be getting better with age. His striking defence though isn't as effective. He gets hit quite a lot. He used to have one of the best chins the sport has seen and was almost impossible to finish. Recently though his chin has disintegrated and he has been knocked out in 3 of his last 8 fights. His wrestling offense isn't really there and I cant think of any times in recent fights where he has landed many takedowns. His wrestling defense has improved over the years though but there aren't many that want to be on the ground with him because of his submission skills. His ground game is his strongest point and has 21 wins by submission. He has lost 2 fights by submission also but that was against Fabricio Werdum and Frank Mir who are 2 of the best submission artists in all of mma. In his last fight he fought Roy Nelson and was Knocked out cold by an overhand right in the first round. It was brutal and sad to see. I did think we may not see him fight again after that but after over a year out he is back. I must say that 2 of his best performances in recent years were when he was fighting in his homeland of Brazil and the crowd seem to bring the best out in this aging veteran.
I think this fight will be contested on the feet. As I said neither of them has very good takedown offense but they do both have quite good takedown defence. So I think they will both find it hard taking it to the ground. If it does hit the ground though, they both have good bjj and it will be tough to submit 1 another. I personally don't think either will be looking for the takedown though. They both believe in their stand up skill and stefan has had a new striking coach for this fight and Nogueira will have the Brazilian crowd behind him and I think he will want to give them a KO.
