Witthoeft vs Koukalova by Tennisguy
This is a round of 16 match from the Kuala Lumpur WTA between Carina Witthoeft from Germany and Klara Koukalova from the Czech Republic.
These players have never met before in a match so this will be their first encounter. Witthoeft defeated Doi in the first round 7-5, 7-5. She played well in that match but Doi was making a lot of easy unforced errors so I don't really know what to make of it considering the score was pretty tight.
On the other hand Koukalova had a easy win against Patricia Mayr 6-1, 6-3. She actually showed glimpses of her former self when she was a top 20 player. She has had a string of bad results that coincided with some personal problems (her divorce and name change) and she hasn't really played well from there on. From the way she played against Mayr it kind of looked that whatever was bothering her so far is no longer an issue and that really showed in her game.
Witthoeft in my opinion is a bit to hyped up by the bookies and is considered a favorite here because of that. Sure she had a decent showing at the Australian Open but her results are not nearly close to what Koukalova has managed in her career. The german player usually wins in ITF level tournaments and rarely has any decent performances in the higher level tournaments. Let's take the Antwerp WTA tournament that took place in the beginning of February where she lost miserably in the qualif. stages to Bonaventure 6-3, 6-1. Another example is also the Hobart from the bigging of the year where she also lost in the qualif. stages to Townsend 6-3, 7-5, and if that's not enough the loss against Abduraimova 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) in the qualif. stages of the Shenzhen WTA tournament. I am saying this because I think it's quite an important factor here. What I'm trying to say is that I don't think she is ready for this level of tournaments and considering that last year she hasn't played even a 1st round match of a tournament that wasn't ITF level might suggest that she is struggling.
To me Koukalova is way to experienced and overall is the better player so I think at these odds it's a no brainer and she is definitely the one to back here.
