The Saints have struggled lately with only 1 win in their last 5 matches. This was a 1-0 victory over a troubled Queens Park Rangers back in early February. Since then they have a draw against West Ham and 2 defeats against Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion. A sign that maybe Southampton are finally falling into the expected place which is probably just outside the European places.
Their biggest problem at the moment is scoring a goal! In their last 7 Premier League matches they have only scored 2 goals, largely due to Graziano Pelle, their early season star, struggling to find the net. There is a possibility he will be dropped tonight in favour of Shane Long.
Their home form has also suffered lately with only 2 wins in 8, that is a long way off the dominant displays we saw early on in the season when they were beating Arsenal 2-0, Everton 3-0 and Sunderland 8-0.
Their opponents, Crystal Palace, are still seeing the positive effects of a change of manager. Palace were in the relegation zone when Alan Pardew took charge but they have since climbed to 12th place in the Premier League, 8 points clear of safety and they are now expected to still be playing Premier League football again next season.
The reason for this sudden climb has to be down to their away form. They are currently unbeaten in 5 away games with 3 wins and 2 draws, and currently on a 3 game winning streak away from home after their impressive 3-1 win over West Ham. However, 2 goal hero Glenn Murray will be suspended after being sent off during this match.
The away side do have a striker crisis with Chamakh, Campbell & Sanogo still out injured. Shola Ameobi will likely play up front for the Eagles.
With Southampton struggling for goals and Palace currently excelling in away games there shouldn't be too much between the two sides.
