Gabon put their woes at friendly matches behind them when they faced a familiar Burkinafaso in their AFCON 2015 opener. Only one in their last six mutual meeting has the Burkina babes been better than Gabon and all aggregates, especially not-gelling characteristic football by Burkinafaso ensured Gabon won 2-0, in a match that although looked balance but Gabon took their chances better. Burkinafaso carried the lofty runner-up at last edition to the tournament this year but their journey back then had players who were on-song, some elements of luck, including been helped by the Mbombela stadium in Nelspruit (where they played 5 of their matches). It was a stadium responsible for 7 out of 8 matches ending as draw. Anyway, even the winner of that edition – Nigeria failed to make it (rings a bell again that African football is excessively UN-mathematical).

Congo faced a spirited Equitorea Guinea host in their opener which ended 1-1. Guinea had chances to have even doubled their advantage. They scored a clear but disallowed goal wrongly judged as offside but their registered goal itself was also an offside. Anyway, the Claude El roy side gave a good account of themselves too, and importantly got an equalizer towards the finishing moment of the game.

These two sides are not distance from each other in football quality, and odds should have been better represented. The reminder that Congo beat Nigeria in Abuja (Nigeria home) four months ago, even makes the odds jittery.
