Besiktas vs Tottenham by Jamesington
I understand the bookmakers have Besiktas as favourites for this match; they are playing at home against a team who do not need to win, Tottenham have left some first team players at home and Besiktas haven't lost a home game in... oh, wait 3 matches?! For me, the Besiktas favouritism is a bit over the top and whilst I think it unlikely that you will see a completely full strength Spurs side, I really don't see a Besiktas win - given the home side themselves are without some key players themselves.
The Besiktas absentees are far more important than the players Tottenham will be missing and without Demba Ba, the Turkish side are nothing like as serious a threat - the Senegalese striker has scored half Besiktas' goals in the group stage and there is no replacement with anything like as much threat in front of goal. Ba scored but then went off injured against Trabzonspor and will miss this game, in addition the player who came on for Ba in that match (Pektemek) subsequently broke his nose in the same match and will therefore be missing too. Goalkeeper Gönen who started the last EL match is likely to be out, whilst regular starters Özyakup and Sivok will both miss the game.
Spurs will leave behind the group's top scorer Harry Kane but they have a more than capable replacement in Soldado and apart from that the only significant absences from the squad are Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen. Spurs may not win the game but they are more than capable of holding out for a draw which would see them top the group.
Tottenham haven't been beaten in the group stages in their last 18 matches. A win may be what Besiktas need to win the group, they are already qualified and that may have to do - I do not think they can win this match with such a depleted squad.
