Croatia vs Germany by 20legend
Croatia was one of the biggest disappointments in their first match of the Euro 2014, as they played a terrible game of handball and ultimately lost against Sweeden (28-30). When thinking about the defensive strength that Croatia possesses, we did not see anything to it at all. Almost half of the goals conceded came in counter play and it led to easy goals for Sweeden who literary ran Croatia down. The coach Vladimir Conjug stated after the game that it looked like his team was affected negatively on the fact that they play in front of their own people, before it sometimes looked better. Their 1st keeper Jelena Grubisis did not play in the first game, but should now be available for the rest of the tournament. This is a huge confidence booster in terms of the defensive structure for this team.
Germany also disappointed in their first match against Netherlands as they lost 26-29 against a “weaker” team on paper. The Germans are struggling bigtime with injuries and they almost score every goal from distance, as it looks like they have no plan in the offensive phase of their game. Germany did also missing their biggest star, Susann Müller in their first match. She has struggled a lot with an injury (broken finger), but she did train with her teammates on Tuesday. It is still uncertain if she if her hand is good enough to play the whole match/ how long she can play/ how much she can contribute, as she has been injured for quite a while now. The answer will come on Wednesday afternoon.
This is a game where Croatia must win if they could have any hope of a medal as they obviously have the potential to get. Germany has also pressure on them as a loss here will mean an early exit from this year’s European Championship. Croatia is a way better team here and I expect the whole team to step up especially defensively, as they need to run a lot more than they did against Sweden. As long as they manage to get back on track to their usually strong defensive level, I think that they should take a pretty comfortable win tonight. Germany should be a much better fit to Croatia with more long distance shots compared to the up-tempo way of playing from Sweden. My pick will be Croatia to win with at least two goals tonight.
