Ulster Rugby vs Scarlets by Sebmc
Day three in Group 3.
Behind Toulon, Ulster was the big favorite in this group. However, this did not go as planned for the Northern Ireland province. Indeed, with only one point after two days, Ulster's back to the wall and must win today. During the first day, Ulster was defeated 25-18 in Leicester before falling 13-23 at home facing the Toulon ogre.
In the league, Ulster is much better shape. In fact, they occupy the second place behind Munster. At home, they have five wins in as many meets and often largely won: 20 against Zebre, 30 against Edinburgh, +20 against Glasgow , +17 vs Newport and +9 VS NS Ospreys.
For this match Ulster will rely on his Springbok scrum half international, Ruan Pienaar. who makes his return. However, the Irish international , Jared Payne, was hit in the foot and will mis this game. Despite this, the back line looks great with Tommy Bowe and Stuart Olding.
The pack of Ulstermen is not as good as last season with John Afoa and Johann Mueller's departure but it still remain a reference in Europe.
Ulster: L Ludik; T Bowe, D Cave, S Olding, C Gilroy, I Humphreys, R Pienaar; C Black, R Best (capt), W Herbst, D Tuohy, F vd Merwe, R Diack, R Wilson, N Williams.
Replacements: R Herring, A Warwick, D Fitzpatrick, A O'Connor, C Ross, P Marshall, S McCloskey, M Allen.
Llanelli Scarlets is in second place in the group with 4 points. They lost 28-18 in the first day at Toulon before winning 15-3 at home to Leicester. In the league, they occupy seventh place and have never won away. In their three defeats on the road, twice they lost by more than 10 points.
For this meeting, the Scarlets can count on the return of their international: Liam Williams, Rhys Priestland, Samson Lee, Jake Ball and Scott Williams. However, they have some significant absentees like Ken Owens, Gareth Davies or Barclay, the best third line of the Welsh team.
Scarlets: Liam Williams, Harry Robinson, Regan King, Scott Williams (captain), Michael Tagicakibau, Rhys Priestland, Aled Davies; Rob Evans, Emyr Phillips, Samson Lee, Jake Ball, Johan Snyman, Aaron Shingler, James Davies, Rory Pitman
Replacements: Kirby Myhill, Phil John, Rhodri Jones, George Earle, Lewis Rawlins, Rhodri Williams, Steven Shingler, Gareth Owen
On his last four receptions of Llanelli, Ulster won 3 times by more than 11 points:
14/03/14 PRO Ulster Llanelli Scarlets 26: 13
05/10/13 PRO Ulster Llanelli Scarlets 28: 17
04/01/13 PRO Ulster Llanelli Scarlets 47: 15
02.12.11 PRO Ulster Llanelli Scarlets 24: 17
They absolutely must take the offensive bonus to stay in the race in this competition. I expect a big Ulster match with a lot of points.
