Karabukspor vs Besiktas by Keyvay
Beşiktaş, missing their central defender Tomas Sivok, and main goalkeeper Tolga Zengin, had proven that the shaky defense they have still persists in the past games they have played. Coming from a 2-2 draw from the underdogs Asteras Tripolis where they got the single point they needed to qualify, it was clear that the defensive problems were there.
The backup goalkeeper Cenk Gönen played mid-week in Greece and has always been a point of criticism by Beşiktaş fans and the Turkish media for his costly mistakes in ball handling. Today, it was announced that even though Cenk was out with an injury for the past few days he would be starting today as well.
For the past three seasons, Beşiktaş have always had defensive problems and were extremely vulnerable to counter attacks and set pieces. Beşiktaş central defender Pedro Franco and the right back Serdar Kurtuluş are known to be a slow players and their mistakes have cost Beşiktaş many points, as was the case in the away games of Asteras, and SAİ Kayserispor.
Just by analyzing the statistics, you will not get a realistic picture of this games situation. It may seem that Beşiktaş are huge favorites for this game but it will defiantly be a very hard game for them. Expected rainfall during the game, the poor conditions of the Dr. Necmettin Şeyhoğlu Stadium pitch (This is especially important since the Karabük manager has raised his concerns over the pitch condition, and that since Beşiktaş play a fast short passing game it will be very hard to do so -just like in the Beşiktaş home ground the Olympic Stadium (Beşiktaş Home statistics are terrible)- in this sort of pitch.), and the defensive play style of Karabük will result in a difficult and slow game for Beşiktaş.
It may seem that Karabük is a candidate for relegation when looked at the table, but it must not be forgotten that this team was contending for the top 5 just last season with the very same squad, and that their current standing in the table has come from points lost to Turkish giants such as Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe.
Karabük, alongside their fans to support them, will resist Beşiktaş and try to score through set pieces and counter attacks by taking advantage of the unsettled Beşiktaş defense. Beşiktaş on the other hand is in a difficult situation since their title rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe have controversially won their games this week.
There is no doubt that Beşiktaş are better in terms of quality, but with the poor conditions of the game, I simply cannot see how there will be many goals scored in this match.
Alternative bets may include first half under 1.5 goals, or total goals under 2.5 goals.
My prediction is that Beşiktaş may edge a victory here with a 0-1 score, but that goal will not be coming in the first half. You can expect to see a very resistant Karabükspor today.
