Up early this morning, and there's a cracking card at Newbury today where i fancy 3 or 4. The first is the David Elsworth warhorse Balkan Knight. This 8 year old has been about seemingly ages, and has been booting about the top races for years. His last 6 runs have been in group level races which are a better standard than the listed class race he is contesting today. His profile of his racing is something that interests me greatly today as he has had a run under his belt this season and when he has had his first run of the year before he has gone onto run a very close second in a group 2 last year, a very close 2nd in this race in 2006, a win in a handicap in 2005 and 2004, and he won his maiden at the second attempt in 2002. So you can see, he generally needs his first run of the season, and generally improves for it ( as so many horses do ), but as he gets older he seemingly gets better with age and I can really see him going very close in this listed contest against a handful of rivals who all have something to proove, whether it be fitness or class.

He loves a bit of cut in the ground too, so any rain in Berkshire will be another boost to his chances. I really like Balkan Knight today, and he can turn over the godolphin hotpot.
