This is the 200th running of the 2000 guineas which is the first classic race of the new flat season. This is a race for 3 year old colts over the straight mile of the Rowley Mile Course at Newmarket. It has been won by some high class colts in it's time. Recently it has been won by superstars such as Golan, King of Kings, Refuse to Bend, George Washington and the truly awesome Rock of Gibraltar. Whether anything of that calibre lines up today will be seen in the months to come, but I really like Ibn Khaldun the mount of Frankie Dettori and trained by Saeed Bin Suroor. Like all of the Godolphin runners, he comes here without a previous run this season, but so do over half the field, and it is the modern trend to come here on seasonable debut.

In his 2 year old season last year he won 4 out of his 5 starts culminating in a superb demolition job of the field in the group 1 Racing Post Trophy, which is more known as a 2 year old Derby trial than a guineas trial. The way he won that suggested he will definitely get this mile trip, and could well turn out to be a top notcher at the longer middle distances in time. His sire is Dubai Destination who was a top notch miler and who beat Rock of Gibraltar as a 2 year old. His mum is Gossamer who won the 1000 guineas here a few years back, so he is bred by 2 fantastic horses. I think he is a pretty guaranteed cert for a place as he will definitely stay the trip, and some of these will be trying the trip for the first time and in the end turn out to be sprinters, as they don't really stay the mile.

The reason I have gone each way is because of New Approach. This Irish trained colt is awesome, and is unbeaten in 5 starts, the last 2 being group 1 performances, where he beat todays second favourite Ravens Pass. Ravens Pass has run this year in the Craven here at Newmarket, and was beaten and should come on for that run, and New Approach has apparently been training well, but at around 13/8 he represents little value against a colt who has form to be put up there to comparison, and if the fav does beat him we get our stake money back, and about 1/2 a point profit, and no harm done, but it could well be that Ibn Khaldun is the superstar that his owner Sheikh Mohammed so desparately craves, and I'm betting that he may well be.
