Revenge is sweet.
Revenge will be had at White Hart Lane tonight.
Chelsea were rightly beaten at Wembley a few weeks ago as Grant played a team, and a style that was alien to the normal Chelsea machine. I was there that day, and was utterly shocked when he played both Anelka and Drogba together, and kept Cole and Ballack on the bench. The Carling cup was Spurs's season all wrapped up in one game, and you could tell that their fans, their coach's and most importantly their players wanted it more.
Tonight is a totally different kettle of fish, and the boot is very much on the other foot. Chelsea can sniff the premiership title for the first time in months, and (although unlikely ) there could be a 3 way go at the top come 10pm tonight. There is a massive weekend of football coming up, and Grant will want to go into that with 100% confidence, and that will only come with 3 points here tonight.
With no real injury worries on either side, this should be a true game of football, and the best team will win. Chelsea have only been beaten by Man Utd and Arsenal since Grant took over, and he, along with JT will be chomping at the bit to avenge the Carling Cup defeat tonight.
I have watched a re-run of the final a few times now, and it is fascinating to watch that it was JT and not Grant who was rousing the players, and giving instructions and generally geeing the players up. Grant took a very much back seat in the whole proceedings, and it would not surprise me if he did so again tonight.
JT is an inspirational leader, and a passionate player who would walk through walls for his club. He will be devastated by their failure in the domestic cups this year, and will be looking to the Premier League and Champs league as the only pots of success that are available to him. JT will want to win the premier league more than the champs league, as he is a true english footballer, and realises that this is a more treasured prize than the glitz of the jug eared pot. He will lead the team tonight to victory against a Spurs team that has had a few stumbles of late, and that have really nothing left to play for in the last 10 games or so.
It is difficult for a team like Spurs to get motivated for games when they have no real bearing on their end of season prizes. They are in the UEFA cup for next year. They won't get 4th position in the league, and they won't be relegated. They of course will be trying tonight, but they will come up against a Chelsea side who will be playing with 100% more commitment, passion and pride.
Whether Grant plays Drogba, Anelka or both, he will have a top class striker leading the way against a defence that has conceded 7 goals after the 90 minutes has been up in all games this season and a team that has lost 3 of their last 5 in all comps.
Chelsea to take this tonight. I can see goals, and I can see a heated affair. But come 10pm, we'll be right back in the mix.
