The election of 2008 will select the 44th President of the United States. The 2008 race will not be run neither by the sitting President nor by the sitting Vice President, as George W. Bush will be prohibited from being elected to office as “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice” (XXII Amendment to the US Constitution). Dick Cheney has announced more than once that he will not run even if he will be nominated. Candidates are not officially declared yet but there should be no candidates out of the ones we can find in the main American newspapers.

On the Republican side there are two main favorites: Sen. John McCain and Rudolph Giuliani, the first one being favorite over the second one by now. Senator McCain is considered as the front-runner for his party’s presidential nomination but officially said that he will not decide until early next year. The fact that he has formed a committee to explore the option already brought McCain as the possible Republic candidate of the next President election. Among all other possible candidates (Condoleeza Rice, George Allen, George Pataki and others) I think that Rudolph Giuliani is the one who can succeed defeating McCain. The odds for Giuliani as Republican candidate are still very attractive (6.00). The former New York major became famous all over the world for his firm leadership after his city on September 11, 2001 suffered the most terrible terrorist attack of the history. Many people recognize the good work he did both for New York and for his campaigns as Republican fundraiser. I expect Giuliani to get closer to McCain and maybe to beat him before challenging the Democrat candidate in the final and decisive run.

If I proposed two names for the Republican candidates (chosing Giuliani) I have no doubts about the name of the Democrat candidate: Hillary Clinton. The Democrat candidate of year 2000, Al Gore, already declared that he will not run for president in 2008 and this decision lets Mrs. Clinton take the leadership on the run towards the Democrat nomination. The other candidates do not seem to be able to beat their colleague: John Kerry lost the 2004 presidential race while Wesley Clark, former Nato Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, is a professional military man who might work well but would also remember the years of Bush administration.

Hillary Clinton is the front-runner of the Democrats and soon can become unbeatable. She is now Senator in New York and can be the first former First Lady to run for a presidential election and the first woman to become President of the United States. She has been the secret of Bill Clinton’s success as she had been his best advisor before Bill Clinton became president and remained on the side of her husband also in the negative days of his administration. Bill and Hillary Clinton confirmed to be one of the most successful political couple of the history and their success is not come to an end in my opinion while Bill Clinton’s years will probably one day be described as one of the best administrations in the American history. Now is too soon and the people still have not recognized the right value of Bill Clinton’s Presidency.

United States will confirm his firm intention to defeat international terrorism but will also try to find new options and solutions as the past years have represented a big step back compared to the Democrat administrations. Military will be soon be substituted again by diplomacy and the trust in the international partnership.
