It is hard not to back a freshly relegated side that has more resources than most other clubs in the lower division. That is definitely true in this case when Charlton takes on newly promoted Scunthorpe. Charlton, despite the loss of their captain Luke Young and Darren Bent, still look a quality side for this division. The likes of Darren Ambrose, Jerome Thomas, Zheng Zhi could all be playing for a lower-end Premiership club at least. Even though their attack may not exactly set the Premiership alight, they are mostly proven strikers in this division and certainly look the part in League One and League Two, with most of them averaging 20 goals a season.
As if playing their first game in the Championship against Charlton is not difficult enough, Scunthorpe have to do it without their talisman Billy Sharp. Without him, it is hard to see how goals would flow freely as they had done last season.
With Scunthorpe lacking serious firepower and Charlton bidding to make a swift return to the Premiership, I would expect them to dispatch Scunthorpe quite readily. Charlton to win 3-0.
