Alaves vs Deportivo
Alaves walked away with a 2:2 draw in the first leg of 1/8 finals of Copa del Rey against Deportivo La Coruna away from home and the team now actually remains slight favorite to progress further before the second leg, thanks to high scoring draw from the first match. No doubt that the players of Alaves will try to calculate a little, since lower scoring draw can bring them to the quarter-finals.
They exploited the fact of making a great entrance into the match, by scoring goal in third minute via Santos, while they doubled up the lead from the penalty kick taken in second minute of additional time in the first halftime via Mendez. They had the lead all the way till 73rd minute, but the final result still reflects fair image. As for the LaLiga competition, Alaves took a point away from home last weekend in a goalless game on the road to Athletic Bilbao. They remained in the middle of the table with twenty-two points earned, which is ten more than relegating troubled Gijon which leaves them some more relaxed approach for the next months probably. Home team has no huge injury worries for his clash, but some rotation is expected.
Deportivo, on the other side, had a 2:2 draw from the first leg and even though it’s a negative result, team can be fully satisfied since they were losing 2:0 till last seventeen minutes of the game. A bit luckily but fairly, hosts sealed the draw thanks to goals from Gama in 73rd and Joselu in third minute of additional time.
Overall, it was quite a defensive game during which neither of the sides impressed a lot in offense, with the players of Deportivo holding much more of the ball possession, but without creating many dangerous situations – still their two late goals were deserved and more of less, the final result reflects fair image of the game. Deportivo took a point in a 1:1 draw on the road last weekend, taking a point against Espanyol on Friday evening. The team remained in the second part of the table, with five points more than relegating placed Gijon and need to keep with positive results to detach themselves further away from the relegation zone. Right back Laure (2/0) continues to miss out, but further rotation is expected.
I don’t expect this game to be very open, but neither completely low scoring. Deportivo will need to attack here, while Alaves probably has some time to calculate. Two or three goals being scored in this one seems like the perfect choice to me in this game.
