Euro Qualifiers: Slovakia v Russia
Slovakia enter this game as very crucial for their Euro 2012 campaign. With a 4-2-2 record they are on 4th position, three points behind leaders Russia, two points behind Republic of Ireland and at the same number of points as Armenia, this means that Slovaks will have to win today no matter what in order to keep their chances real. With only six goals scored in eight matches it’s actually big surprise that they earned 14 points till now. Things are not looking so bright for Slovakia after World Cup 2010, as they lost twice to Armenia (1-7) on aggregate, and are generally playing awful football lately losing at home to teams like Bosnia, Armenia as said, Denmark, they even managed to lose against Luxembourg 1-2 in a friendly game at the beggining of September. Also, they were unable to win better then 1-0 against Andorra, two times. Slovakia unable to create dangerous situations and to score more goals in a single game will have many problems with individually much better Russia. Also, their defense is very shaky when talking about counter attacks which could be seen in already mentioned last game against Armenia at home 0-4.
Russia, on the other side, is currently leading group B with 17 points and most likely they would be satisfied with a draw here. Russians are on a seven matches run without losing a game, having low number of goals in their matches and having a clean sheet for four matches in a row now (Cameroon, Serbia, FYR Macedonia and R. Ireland). Russians are making steady performances based on very good defense and counter attacks that might damage Slovaks heavily today. Goalkeeper Akinfeev will be missing, but more then good replacement – Malafeev will take his place.
Neither side can afford to lose this game, but Slovaks are in need of points more then Russia and with their attack being unable to score goals and create chance they will leave too much space for fast Russian wingers to create fast breaking counter-attacks. Odds are pretty good to be missed as Slovaks are in a really bad shape right now.
