EURO 2012: Ukraine vs Sweden

Ukraine is one of the hosts of this EURO 2012 and as the hosting nation they had much more time to prepare themselves for the biggest football event this year. As said, they had a lot of times to prepare and play big number of friendly matches in last two years. Their results had many ups and downs, having in mind that they didn’t play against the very best teams in the Continent, Ukraine looks like a below average nations at this EURO, at least looking at their recent results. They played twelve matches last year, and had only one win in first eight games (win over Uzbekistan 2:0), while they drew to Romania and Sweden, but lost to Italy, France, Sweden, Uruguay – all four matches played at home and lost to Czechs 4:0 in Prague. Finally, end of the year was a bit better for them as they won over Bulgaria, Estonia and Austria and drew with Germans at home.

Sweden, on the other side, were destined to take the second position in their qualifying group as the Holland national team were clear favorites from the start. Swedish team took the second position in front of Hungariand and Finish, who were their biggest opponents for that spot. As the best second placed team they didn’t have to play additional play-off matches (they only lost to Hungary and Holland on the road), while they defeated the Dutch team at home 3:2 in the last round of group stage, a win that secured them EURO spot. Later on last year, they played two matches away from home, losing to Denmark 0:2 and England 0:1. Finally, in their two friendlies this season, they were better than Iceland 3:2 and Serbia 2:1.

Ukrainian team doesn’t look that strong on the field, neither Swedish team are made of super stars, but they look quite good in the defense (especially in a game against Serbia which is probably near to quality of Ukrainians), with always dangerous Ibrahimovic in attack. Swedish team is not set to play defensively here knowing that their two other matches will be even harder – against French and English sides, neither of these two are supposed to be defending here and under such a circumstances Swedish are little closer to the victory.
