Tomas Berdych vs Janko Tipsarevic

Tomas Berdych is not playing his best tennis in Dusseldorf so far, but he still has all three wins here and is the leading actor in Czech team. He won over Roddick in first round in two more than easy sets, but Roddick showed awful tennis here losing not only to Berdych, but also to Go Soeda and Carlos Berlocq, all three matches in two sets. Later on, the Czech won over Go Soeda, but had to struggle in three, just as against Carlos Berlocq in third round, finished the third set with a 6:3 result. After a very good start of the season at clay court tournaments, where Berdych reached semifinals of Monte Carlo, finals of Madrid Open and quarter-finals of Rome (he was eliminated by arguably three best players in the World – Djokovic, Federer and Nadal), he is still earning victories but it’s obvious that his level of tennis is not at his best and that he might be slipping down a bit in his form.

Janko Tipsarevic, on the other side, had two easy wins in the group stage defeating Bogomolov and Zovko, losing only four games in these two matches. The third match, that was a deciding game for Serbia, he managed to win Kohlchereiber 6-4 3-6 7-5 and later on to secure the Finals at Dusseldorf World Cup. He is not having so good season as his opponent does, but still he had some interesting wins this Spring. He reached quarterfinals of Barcelona where he was defeated by Nadal, but later on next week he reached semifinals of Madrid, beating on his way Simon and Djokovic (in two sets), before losing to Federer in already mentioned semifinal. As said, he is not having a bad season at all and more promising for this match is that he was almost always at his very best when playing for the national team.

Berdych’s game had a lot of holes this week in Dusseldorf. During some of the sets it really looked like he is completely out of his form and that he lacks timing hitting the ball. These two players already met nine times, with score being set in Berdych’s favor 5-4. There is no doubt that we will have another interesting match in front of us and that Tipsarevic has much more chances to win this match than the odds suggest.
