Wawrinka vs Nishikori

Stanislas Wawrinka is still trying to find his form and somehow can’t perform constantly very well, although from time to time he shines at some tournaments. His beginning of the year was mediocre with quarter-final of Chennai and third round of Australian Open, while his clay court season was much better.

 

Semi-finals of Acapulco and Buenos Aires were his results in February in South America clay court tournament, while European clay court season wasn’t that bad for him either. He was losing only to bigger names like Verdasco, Almagro, Del Potro, Nadal and Djokovic. Finally, he reached fourth round of French Open, winning over Cipolla, Andujar and Simon, losing finally to home favorite Tsonga. Wimbledon was a disappointment for him as he lost to Melzer, while he had no luck at Olympics drawing gold medalist winner Murray in the first round. He won over Mathieu in the first round, while he defeated David Ferrer in two easy sets in second round.

Kei Nishikori, on the other side, started his season in a great fashion reaching quarter-finals of Australian Open, while he played a bit worse after Australian Open, he did improve during Spring and by the end of the clay court season.

 

Of course, he isn’t a typical clay court player and also had an injury so he had to take two months pause and couldn’t play at French Open. Anyway, he reached third round of Wimbledon, but also at Newport on grass court. In between, he played in Atlanta winning against Berankis in second round, but lost to Go Soeda in quarter-finals. Grass proved once again to be good surface for him as he reached quarter-finals at Olympics and then he switched to US hard court tournaments. Querrey was better than him in Toronto, while he won over Grannolers and Blake here. He struggled last night against Blake as he was a set down and Blake lacked energy to finish him in two sets.

 

Wawrinka is having a mediocre season, but he didn’t play that bad at hard court this season, although the played low number of tournaments on that surface. He looked very well yesterday against Ferrer, especially on his own serve and if he repeats same game, Japanese won’t have too many chances today.
