Molde was better than Latvian champion Ventspils in the second qualifying round for the Champions League edition 2012/13. They did almost all job in the first leg at home as they won the first game with 3:0 result, while the second leg finished with a 1:1 score. Although they passed Ventspils easily, in comparison to the last season it’s obvious that Molde is a bit weaker now.

Basel, on the other side, have won over Estonian champions Flora Tallin 5-0 on aggregate score. They were better in both legs, winning first 2:0 away from home and defeating them in Swiss with a 3:0 result. Basel had a great success last season as they have reached the 1/8 finals of Champions League losing to Bayern Munich, while they eliminated Manchester United in a group stage. However, even with so good result, they still have to play qualifying rounds from the beginning and prove once again that they are Champions League material.

 

Positive thing for the Swiss side is that their league has already started and that they already have played three matches there. Although their record in domestic league isn’t satisfying at this moment, it’s still a positive thing that they are fully in competitive season, than in comparison to many other leagues which are yet to start. Basel won the first round away to Servette with a narrow 1:0 result, while the other two matches, against Grasshopers and Luzern. Still they are at the third position and still with lot of time in front of them to show their quality.

 

Swiss team is much more experienced in this kind of matches and should have the upper hand in the first leg too. Both teams are trying to play open minded, attacking football and this is something that Basel should exploit from the first leg. They are more creative side in the midfield and the chances for them to win in this leg should be bigger than the odds suggest.
