Ebden vs Paire
Matthew Ebden is still struggling to reach ATP level and it seems like he will have a lot of difficulties to achieve that, at least in this season. His year didn’t start well, his maximum were second round of less known tournaments losing later on to any better player. However, he had one great result in Indian Wells where he achieved fourth round. Of course, for known players fourth round isn’t anything special, but for a player of his level it was the greatest result in his career. He won over Bennetau, Kunitsyn and Fish, finally losing to Isner in two sets. Just like before that tournament, after that tournament he didn’t have any better result. Ebden lost all his five clay court matches without winning a single set. However, it’s known that slower surfaces aren’t for him and as soon as the grass tournaments started he won in first round over Bachinger in two sets, losing easily to Cilic in second round of London ATP tournament. Last week, he played in Eastbourne winning three qualifying matches but losing to Steve Darcis in the first round.

Benoit Paire, on the other hand, also wasn’t that known player in previous years, but it looks like he is making his path in professional tennis over the past year and his progress is especially visible this season. Hard court isn’t his favorite surface and he isn’t getting his best results there, but he had a good start of the season in Auckland where he reached quarter-finals coming from the qualifying draw and beating Ferrero and Chela, finally losing to Olivier Rochus in three sets. Clay court season saw him reaching quarter-finals of Casablanca, second round of French Open where he lost to much better David Ferrer, but also saw him reaching the finals of ATP Belgrade. On his way to the finals where he lost to Seppi, he won over Nieminen, Fognini, Andujar – not bad players at all. Still, Paire had a good tournament in Hertogenbosch reaching semifinals against David Ferrer where he lost in three sets, beating previously Goffin, Ito and Kubot.
Frenchman showed much more during this season, his favorite surface isn’t grass, but he showed last week and that he can play on it and that he plays good. Paire is better ranked, more talented and younger, his time is still to come while Ebden showed against Cilic and Darcis that he can’t be real danger on grass for any better player.
