Poland vs Greece

Poland is the hosting nation at this years EURO and no matter that the millions of Polish people don’t want to hear this – this was maybe the only way for them to enter such a big competition looking at their previous results in last two or three years. However, they still do belong here and aren’t someone who got the place completely undeservedly. Things to be better for them, they got probably the easiest group having to play against Russia, Czech Republic and Greece. At the same time, this means that neither of these four nations are complete outsiders in the group and because of the all four being almost at the same level, all matches will have to be played very cautious, without some all out attack tactics, at least not in the first two rounds. Polish looked fine in their recent friendlies as they drew at home against Germans 2:2, getting the same score against one of the best Asian teams – South Korea. Later on during 2011, they won over Belarus away, but lost at home against Italians, just to win over Hungary 2:1. Just before the EURO, they had two friendlies, winning over Andorra 4:0 and Slovaks 1:0.

Greece, on the other side, came to EURO 2012 after earning the first position in their qualifying group (group that was made of Croatia, Israel and Latvia as their biggest rivals). This was a bit surprising outcome for the Greeks as most of them had in mind that the second position and play-off rounds is the reality for their national team. Anyway, with a good finishing when they managed to beat the Croats at home 2:0 and to win in Tbilisi over Georgia 2:1, the Greeks took the first place and could schedule two extra friendly games before the EURO. They drew against Russia 1:1 and lost to Romania 1:3 back in Novemeber 2011. Now in May, they drew against Slovenia 1:1 and won over Armenia 1:0 in their last friendly game. As it could be seen from their results, they are playing defensive minded football trying to slow the tempo as much as possible.

 

As said before, neither of four nations in this Group are complete outsiders and although the Polish are saying they are going for a win here, they will surely not be attacking from the beginning and in the end, both teams will be satisfied with a draw here, no matter what they say before the game.
