Tomic vs Giraldo
This is the first real clay court season for Bernard Tomic, meaning that he only played a couple of tournaments on clay in previous season, but this season he has way better ranking and can enter any tournament he wants, starting from the first round. His clay court season started in Monte Carlo, where he won over Istomin, but lost to Dolgopolov in three, later on he playing every week starting from tournament in Barcelona, winning over Gulbis, but losing to Montanes in three. Little better was his appearance in Munich, where he won over Starace and Rochus, but lost in quarter finals to Lopez. He continued with a lost to Stepanek in Madrid, while he won over Giraldo in Rome, losing to Djokovic in second round. Finally, he won against Lacko in Nice, but lost to Kukushkin in second round in three sets. Here in Paris, he won over Haider-Maurer in three straight sets. His results might not be perfect for a player that is ranked at 29th position, but there is certain improvement in his game and in combination with the fact that he always playing Grand Slams very motivated, we could expect him progressing a little bit further here.
Santiago Giraldo, on the other hand, is a typical representative of South American tennis meaning that he focuses on clay court tournaments mostly during the season. He started with clay tournaments right after the Australian Open, by going to Chile and playing Vina del Mar tournament where he lost to Leonardo Mayer in two. Later on, he lost once again in the first round (to Ramos-Vinolas in Sao Paulo), but played much better at his third tournament as he reached semifinals of Acapulco losing to David Ferrer. At European part of the clay court season, he played in Barcelona winning over Haase and Istomin, but losing to Murray in third round. Later on, he had wins over Darcis, Copil, Hanescu, Gulbis and losings to Youzhny, Almagro and Tomic, without making any impressive result overall. In first round here, he won over Alejandro Falla in four sets.
Few years back, it looked like Giraldo has much more talent and potential to show, but now it seems like he is becoming just one of the mediocre clay court players. Bernard Tomic already won over him this season, actually just two weeks ago and there is no reason to think that this game is just a 50-50 match as the odds represent.
