Andujar vs Hanescu

Pablo Andujar is typical clay court player that bases all his success on the slowest surface. This is the main Grand Slam for him and he is surely looking forward to it as this is the first season for him as established player in top 50. He is also having way, way better season at clay than the previous year. He started his clay court tournaments this year in South America back in February, where he reached quarter-finals of Acapulco losing to David Ferrer, one of the best clay court player in years. Regular, Spring season of clay court tournaments, Andujar started in Casablanca where he managed to defend the title won in 2011. Although the tournament in Casablanca wasn’t very interesting with the player’s lineup, it still represent a good success for any player out of top 10. After that tournament, his best result was semifinals of Belgrade four weeks ago, where he lost to Paire.



Victor Hanescu, on the other hand, could be already considered as a veteran in ATP tennis. His best results are well behind the current time and a lot of minor injuries hurt his performances in previous months. He simply can’t back to his old game and it’s actually just a matter of time when he will announce that he is gonna retire. The Romanian forced himself to play a lot of tournaments on clay this season, starting with it already in February and all he managed is to get a few second round matches at ATP level. His most important wins at clay were against Machado, but also against Andujar back in South America in three sets. However, a lot of things changed since then as he is simply playing way weaker tennis in comparison to then. His last couple of tournaments were Rome, where he won over Harrison in first qualifying round, but lost to Giraldo in second, while he lost in first qualifying round of Nice, losing to Cervanek in two sets.



Andujar is huge favorite for me here, regardless on his weaker results in past 2-3 weeks. Hanescu shouldn’t be someone who is ready to fight with a player of Andujar’s style for hours. Andujar’s odds are a bit too much at this moment and his wins in straight sets doesn’t look that impossible as the odds suggest. The only real threat should be in the first set, if Andujar wins it, there is no reason not to close it in straight sets.
