Kanepi vs Suarez Navarro

Kaia Kanepi haven’t played good tennis on clay court tournaments for years and this final is somehow very big surprise from her. She is strong hitter who tries to finish the point as quick as possible and playing on the slowest surfaces have never been an interesting part of the season for her. For example, last season she played only three tournaments, however she found her form here and won a few matches and deservedly entered the finals of the WTA tournament, which didn’t have very interesting line-up to be honest. In first two rounds Kanepi won over Stephens and King in two easy sets, while she had some troubles in the third round against Cetkovska, defeating her in three. Yesterday, she won over Vinci 6-2 7-5 and showed that her form is not a surprise anymore.

 

Carla Suarez Navarro, as said few days ago, is playing her best tennis on clay court tournaments, this is her part of the season and further progress in the ranking is expected during next couple of months. She is playing inconsistent for months, but as soon as the clay court season started she showed improvement. At the first tournament on clay, she reached semifinals of Barcelona winning against, all opponents in two straight sets. Later on she lost to Errani in the semifinals . Here in Estoril, Carla beat Govortseva in two sets and was better in second round to Slovenian Hercog 6-4 3-0 when the Slovenian retired, Soler-Espinosa was defeated in two easy sets and finally Knapp in quarter-finals 6-4 and 6-0. The Spaniard is playing really well there, trying to be in the point for as much as possible and this is exactly the style of tennis that doesn’t suit to Kanepi at all.

 

Although Kanepi is playing really well, she needs to be in her perfect form and to have perfect timing on the court in order to win easily against the Spaniard. That’s quite unlikely as the Spaniard is someone who plays consistently during the match and tries to stay in the point for as long as possible, which doesn’t suit Kanepi at all.
