Lyon enters this match with very questionable form, but it’s the same with their today’s opponents too. French team has three losses in a row: at home against Real Madrid in Champions League and two in domestic league, Soschaux away and Rennes at home with the same score 2:1. With only four points out of the same number of matches, Lyon is on third place, three points below Ajax and its completely clear to them that only win tonight can extend their hopes to get into next round of Champions League as they still have to play second game against huge group outsiders – Dinamo Zagreb. As said, looking at the table it is obvious that hosts will have to give everything to win today as they ended up in a complicated situation with back to back losses against group favorites Real Madrid. Hosts will have Dejan Lovren available for selection following an injury, while Maxime Gonalons should be also back in starting XI. Remy Vercoutre (foot), Anthony Lopes (ankle), John Mensah (calf) and Yannis Tafer (foot) are all long-term absentees, meaning that Lyon will be boosted with two returns meanwhile those three absentees are already longterm.
Ajax, on the other side, is also playing in a really questionable form. As said, they are three points ahead Lyon, but thats because they already played twice against Dinamo and got two easy wins, having those games aside, they are not better then their today’s opponents at all. Apart from Champions League, they are also playing with many variations lately having lost to Utrecht 4:6 away and drew 2:2 against Breda last week in a league which is much weaker then French. Ajax coach Frank de Boer will be without Derk Boerrigter, Dmitri Bulykin, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Siem de Jong, all due to various injury problems.
Seems like injury problems will affect visitors more as theirs are not long-term ones plus Ajax is receiving way too many goals, eight in last two rounds against teams that cannot be compared to French side. Lyon needs a victory and will get it.
