Aintree - Race 3 v Race Winner
This is a class 2 Heritage Handicap run over 1 Mile and 2 Furlongs.
This looks like being a strongly run race, with several horses that like to get on with things.
Australia Day, Bazergan and Eastern Aria are all horses that regularly front run.
Fanjura, Hillview Boy and Supaseus aren't regular front runners, but have done so in the past.
And with 2 or 3 others that like to race prominently, this race should be run at a good pace.
With that being the case, and with Sandowns stiff finish, this race could just be set up for something coming from off the pace.
The one I am interested in here is number 16 ALMIQDAAD.
This horse is trained by Michael Jarvis and will be ridden today by Richard Hills.
Almiqdaad is a lightly raced 3 year old, having had just 4 career starts.
The horse ran 3 times last year as a 2 year old.
He made his debut at Ascot over 7 Furlongs on fast ground.
He ran very green that day, as many do on debut, but ran well enough to finish 4th of 8.
His 2nd start came at Newmarket on Good ground, where he was stepped up to 1 Mile.
Having tracked the early pace, he finished well to win nicely that day.
His 3rd and final start of last year was back at Ascot.
That came in a Group 2 race.
He could only finish 5th of 8 that day.
Having said that, he was possibly aiming too high too soon there.
However, the fact he was running in a Group 2 after just 2 previous runs, shows connections clearly think quite a bit of the horse.
The horse was off the track almost a year before having his 1st run of this season.
That came at Newmarket, where he was upped to todays 1 Mile 2 Furlong trip.
He was most disappointing that day, finishing last of 5.
However, the ground was on the soft side at Newmarket, which possibly wouldn't have suited the horse.
It was also his 1st run for almost a year, so he would clearly have needed that race.
The race wasn't run to suit the horse either.
Almiqdaad looks to have plenty going for him here today.
He will be much sharper fitness wise today.
Todays quicker ground should also suit him much better.
The race looks like being run at a good pace, which should also help him.
Having had just 4 career starts, the horse should have plenty of improvement to come, especially over these middle distances.
The fact he was running in a group 2 race after just 2 previous runs last year, suggests connections think quite a bit of this horse.
There are some useful handicappers in this field today, however, that's all they are, handicappers.
The majority of them are now quite exposed.
Almiqdaad is clearly the horse in the race with the scope to improve, and he might just turn out to be slightly better than a handicapper.
Hopefully he can show that today.
If Richard Hills can get Almiqdaad settled just off the pace, then he might just be able to show some class and finish strongly.
4 points EACH WAY (8 points in total) Almiqdaad 3.15 Sandown @ 15.0 with Coral 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
