Aintree - Race 4 v Race Winner
This years renewal looks to be fiercely competitive, and plenty can be given chances.
The shape of the race isn't easy to guage, as there are 1 or 2 runners that appear to regularly change running tactics.
I'm having 2 bets in this race today.
The 1st horse i will be backing in this race is number 1 WARRINGAH.
This horse is trained by Sir Michael Stoute and will be ridden by Ryan Moore.
Warringah is a tough sort that likes to front run.
Warringah is the only horse in the race that consistently races from the front.
That being the case, he just might get a soft lead out infront.
He is certainly well drawn in Stall 1.
Som Tala, Record Breaker and Precision Break have all gone from the front in the past, but not on a regular basis.
If Warringah does get his own way out infront, he has plenty in his favour and could be tough to get past.
The horse had his 1st run of the season here at York in May.
That came over 1 Mile and 4 Furlongs, where he finished 11th of 18.
A pretty disappointing effort in truth, but having had 8 months off the track, it can certainly be excused.
That effort came in a class 2 handicap similar to todays.
His 2nd effort of the season came at Windsor.
That was also a class 2 handicap over 1 Mile and 4 Furlongs.
Warringah made all to win comfortably that day.
His 3rd start of the season saw him upped to this 1 Mile 6 Furlong trip here at York.
That was in a Listed race.
He led that day also, and looked like winning until just getting caught on the line.
He lost by a short head, but still put up a fine effort.
Last time out the horse went to Glorious Goodwood, for a Group 3 race over 1 Mile and 4 Furlongs.
Again he went from the front and put up another solid effort.
He only found 1 too good there and finished 2nd.
Todays step back up to 1 Mile and 6 Furlongs will suit, as will the drop back into handicap company.
The trip, track and ground all look ideal for this 4 year old.
If he does get his own way out infront, then he might just dictate things and be hard to pass.
SHould Warringah get taken on for the lead early, either by Som Tala, Record Breaker, Precision Break, or anything else for that matter, then the race could just be set up for a finisher.
The 2nd horse i will be backing in this race is number 20 NANTON.
Nanton is trained by Jim Goldie and will be ridden today by Daniel Tudhope.
Nanton is a tough and game horse that regularly runs well in these big field handicaps.
He appears to relish the hustle and bustle of these types of races.
This horse has won 9 times in his career, at trips ranging from 1 Mile to 1 Mile and 2 Furlongs.
He hasn't proved himself over a trip this far.
However, the way he runs would suggest he deserves a crack at it at least.
Last time out at Haydock, he finished 2nd of 15 in a similar class 2 handicap over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs.
He came from out the back that day, as he usually does, finishing strongly from off the pace.
He was doing all his best work at the finish there, and the way he stayed on strongly suggests he is well worth a go at this trip.
Will he stay ?
Who knows !
Nanton is a horse that likes to be held up off a good strong pace.
If Warringah gets a soft lead out infront, that may not happen for him.
However, if Warringah does get taken on early, they could just set things up for a finisher.
Nanton is proven in the hustle and bustle of these big field handicaps.
If he does get the race run to suit him, then he could just be staying on towards the finish.
He could just surprise a few here today.
Although stamina clearly has to be taken on trust, he is worth chancing at the prices available.
For a horse that usually runs well in these types of races, he looks way over priced.
