League One - Brighton v Southend
Its getting towards crunch time for Southend Uniteds season now, If they are to gatecrash the Play-off party then they really need a run until the end of the season now. Things a going pretty well for my local club at the moment, morale and team spirit in on a high and with 6 wins from the last 8 matches they are THE current form side in League 1 at the moment. Tillson is a good young manager and has built a decent attacking side here that is flexable enough to change formation to suit each game and earned plaudits for his half time decisions against 10 men Walsall at the weekend which many felt won them the match 2-0.
Its been back luck story after back luck story for Brighton this season, The penalty shoot-out win over Manchester City in Septemeber is a distant memory now as they fight for there lives at the bottom end of League 1. Injuries have crippled Brighton this season including injuries to the leading 2 goalscorers Murray and Forster. Russell Slade has been given the job of keeping them up and with a contract only until the end of the season knows that his job probably depends on survival. Its not all doom and gloom though for a Brighton side with just 3 wins since the middle of November, The long injury list is beginning to ease at maybe just the right time. Forster and Murray could make the squad tonight, although it might be a bit soon for them to start. Elphick, Hart and Mayo are due run out for the reserves this week, with several other players making good recoveries for the relegation run in. 5 loanees have joined the club in the past week or 2: Heath, Owusu, Bangura, Borrowdale and Anderson and all played last time out against Leyton Orient in a narrow defeat. I think over the next couple of weeks with the loanees settling in a new manager stamping his methods and ideas on the club and some key players returning they could do enough to climb out of the relegation zone, but maybe this game is a little too soon for Brighton and i fancy an in form Southend side to go to there Pier rivals and come back with all 3 points.
