ATP - Julien Bennetau v Steve Darcis
24 October 2008

Interesting match here, players are very close in ranking - Frenchman Benneteau is 56 in ATP while Belgian Darcis at this day stands at 58 position. Still both show decent tennis and surprisingly they achieved quarter-final of this tour beating before match stronger players. Darcis is one of the most talented Belgian players. He poses great feeling in his hand and from time to time he can be a real threat on court. But still for a while we haven't see any good results on this player side. Average results losing to good players like Ancic or Fish, but also second class players like Levine or Rochus. Still I think he is a big talent but something is missing in his game and now it don't look he will join the group of young wolves chasing the top of ATP. He poses good record on carpet which is 13-5, but we have to notice that most of his matches in this surface where played in 2005 in qualifications matches. Last year he only played three games on carpet. Here in Lyon he played two three setters with good players - Stepanek and Gasquet. Stepanek had a really bad day, it is unusual to him to fire 11 double faults and present such weak serve'n'volley game. Gasquet made some weird mistakes in final set tie-break, although Darcis played really well, but still luck helped him a lot. We didn't hear anything about Julien Benneteau for a while. French man noticed very good season start just after Australian Open to French Open in nearly every tour he was very dangerous opponent and beat a lot of good names. After that something happen and Julien was losing in first round of nearly every tour. I know it is very hard to after such long term of loses suddenly explode with good form but Julien is a very unpredictable player and now when surface changes and he is playing at home I really believe he won't miss a chance to reach semi-final. Clement, great double player and decent singlist and Robredo are good names too and Benneteau without problems send them home. Especially his game against Robredo was extremely good, as always his serve was weird, after double fault he was firing aces, but in exchanges he out stand Robredo who loves to exchange hits. I think Julien is really hungry for game and for wins and young Darcis don't look so scary after eliminating some like Robredo. Last year he reached quarter final here losing to another French man Grosjaen. I think with a little help from the audience Julien will be able to reach next phase of his home tour.
