ATP - Wayne Odesnik v Fabio Fognini
These two players faced each in Indian Wells this season and Odesnik won by 6-1 6-2. But things will be different today, as Odesnik got injured and lost some of his form and Fognini has improved a little bit on the surface. However I think the winner will be the same of that match. Odesnik after an injury lay-off has come back reasonably well by defeating Reynolds and Grosjean and losing to Safin, Mahut and Fish, having won a set in these two last defeats. Odesnik is a good baseliner with a solid serve and the fact that he is a left hander only helps him when it comes to serve. He isn't your typical American player, especially as he is a good clay courter and his patience and ability to hit some technical shots very well make him a tough opponent to beat.
Fabio Fognini is a very talented Italian clay courter who is trying to improve on hardcourt. However he still struggles against good baseliners, like it was showed last week, where he lost to an out-of-form Seppi by 6-4 6-2. The Italian player is 1-5 against left hander players outside clay, with his only win coming against an Argentinian clay courter. In all these five defeats, Fognini has never won more than 4 games in a set, which shows how much he struggles when he has to face a player like Odesnik, in a surface like this one.
Odesnik is playing at home and he has regained most of his confidence pre-injury, Fognini plays too defensively on fast surfaces and Odesnik with his good serve (very high 1st serve percentage) and consistent baseline game will have more than enough to beat his opponent today.
