Carnegie League - Monaghan Utd. v Wexford Youths
22 August 2008

Scythe (Croatia)

Monaghan continues good results and are now fifth on the league table, i would say first after "big four" who are untouchable from the beginning of the season (Dundalk, Waterford, Shels and Sporting). Mons recent good run of three wins was stopped when they lost to lower league side Wayside Celtic in away game (0:1). I don't take that as minus, in fact i think it's good as they will be aware that they can be beaten, even against the lower league team. In their defense, pitch was really bad, there was a heavy rain and they finished game with 10 men. They also conceded only goal from penalty. But, let's return to their league games. Mons improved a lot in recent weeks, catching up on Limerick and jumping over them. They won last three league games in great manner, Shels (2:0), Kildare (2:1) and Athlone (3:0). I would say very efficient for team that, along with todays opponents - Wexford, has worst attack in the league (only 16 goals in 23 games). Today Mons won't have almost full squad, Gartland, Brennan and Clancy are back in team, only Ian Malone is suspended following his already mentioned red card in FAI Cup.
Wexford are currently on rock bottom, with only Kildare close to them. Their recent form is really bad, they have lost last three league games, and also lost in FAI Cup against strong St. Pats (1:3). That was their first goal scored in 180 minutes. Even with that in mind Monaghan would be favorite here, but Youths will today act as their name says. They will fill eight U-18 players today, even one U-16!! They just miss too many players, and high playing tempo in last week eliminated few more. So they will miss: captain A. Russel, defenders Wadding and S. Dempsey, midfielders Lawlor and K. Dempsey, while another midfielder Kelly is unfit. For their small squad it's a big blow, and eventhough they usually have young team, tonight it's going to be even younger.
Mons should use Wexford problems to gain another win and secure their no.5 spot in league. Playing at home in front of their support should be another plus. Interesting fact is that both teams have same goal difference, 16:34, but recent lack of goals from Youths and Mons efficiency inspire me to bet on home team. This two met twice this season, every team took a win, while last season Mons won three out of four, with one draw. I think Mons will continue to dominate in clash with Wexford and win tonight as well.
