ATP - Denis Gremelmayr v Marcos Daniel
Monday, 8/18/2008 10:00AM DENNIS GREMELMAYR (GER) vs. MARCOS DANIEL (BRA)
First match of the day in here. Dennis Gremelmayr has been having a really interesting season and even though most of his results were made on clay, he has also showed that he is a capable player on hardcourt. His semi final presence in Los Angeles two weeks ago showed that. He is a really talented baseline player, who can hit from both wings and even though his game is mostly defensive, he can also be aggressive to finish the points quickly. He is known for his beautiful points, but he can also be practical and win matches on a comfortable way. He is 11-7 on the United States this season and 14-16 outside it, showing that even though he is European, he is getting his best results in the country where this tournament will be played.
His opponent today will be Marcos Daniel. The Brazilian player is known for being a clay courter and the truth is that he has never won a match outside clay at ATP level in his entire career! Today it will be his 16th try to get a win, but looking at his past results and the spot for him in here, I don't think he will stand a chance today. While Gremelmayr is playing on the United States in the past weeks, Daniel played the Olympic Games in Beijing last week and he will play in here to try to adapt to the different conditions of the United States, in order to be at 100% for next week's US Open. But the truth is that he struggles outside clay even at challenger level and against a talented player like Gremelmayr, who will be much more adapted to the conditions of this tournament, he won't stand a chance at all.
Both players have actually a similar style of play, however Gremelmayr can be more aggressive and he has much more weapons to attack his opponents, while Daniel stays in defensive mode for the entire match and that simply doesn't work outside clay, especially against a consistent player like Gremelmayr. Daniel has a reasonable serve, but Gremelmayr has faced four good servers in a row (Lopez, Safin, Roddick, Troicki) and his great returning skills will be able to stop Daniel from using his serve, in order to stay in the match. I expect an easy win for the German player in here, so I'm taking him to win 2-0 in here.
Pick: 3 units (Regular Play) on Dennis Gremelmayr 2-0 @2.10 on Paddy Power
