Womens Javelin - Womens Javelin v Barbora Spotakova
German Christina Obergfoll does not have a major medal in her collection but has been one of the worlds best since 2005. She had the worlds longest throw in 2006 and 2007. her failure to medal at the 2006 European Championships was one of the big suprises that year.
By comparison Czech Barbora Spotakova is an athlete who began her career as a heptathlete before specialising on the javelin. It has proven a wise decision and she has become the world #1 in 2008. She won the World Championships in Osaka in 2007 beating Obergfoll who was unbeaten that season into 2nd place. 2008 seems to have completed the turnaround as she now boasts the 2 longest throws of the year and has a lead of over 1.5m on Obergfolls best throw this year.
No doubt Obergfoll will be desperate to reverse the world championship result but Spotakova starts in Beijing as a slight favourite in my book despite her loss in Ostrava back in June, it'd be a major suprise if anyone other than Spotakova or Obergfoll won.
I think Spotakova is generously priced by VC at 1.95. Its a price worth taking in what looks a head 2 head for Olympic gold. Personally i will be having a saver on Oberfgoll (i will be placing 2 units on her to win) but for the purposes of my record here i will just tip Spotakova to win.
