ATP - Martin Del Potro v Mardy Fish
9 August 2008

When all eyes are fixed on Olympic Games few of players still play in other tours in Us Series. These who didn't get places in Olympic tennis tour are now in Los Angeles and coming soon semifinal in my opinion going to be very interesting. 26-years old American Mardy Fish will stand against 19-years old Argentinian this season revelation Juan Martin Del Potro. About Del Potro I wrote long time ago that he is a really big talent but he won't achieve anything if injuries will keep chasing him. It seems that young Juan's body slowed down a little with growing up process and putting so much power in game don't afflict with so many injuries. It is good time for him and result already came up. Twelve wins streak and two tittle one by one for him on clay in Stuttgart and Kitzbuhel. Beating players like Schwank, Bolelli, Melzer, Hanescu or Gasquet are a fine recommendation for this youngster. Del Potro as a Argentinian is mostly trained for clay surface but with such height (nearly 200cm) and power he must be good on fast surfaces too. Nice combination of patience on line, with power serve and returns. On hard he poses a nice record of 42 wins and 24 loses. Here in Los Angeles he didn't meet a good opponent. Stoppini and Delic are on far away level from him. Against big-serving Delic Juan had few problems. Five break-points chances for American, luckily he used only one. I hope tonight it will be better for del Potro. In all matches he keep nice result over 70% 1'st serve and over 75-80% winnings from 1'st serve. Also Juan Martin poses nice return which should fit excellent for weak 2'nd Fish serve. Mardy Fish had his high and low times in his career. This player from time to time show some tremendous tennis like in this year Indian Wells were he beat Davydenko, Nalbandian, Hewitt and even king Roger Federer. But in my opinion he isn't in such good form right now. Some injuries at the beginning of Us Series and easy loses in last wekk tours, even with Robredo, who is definitely clay-courter without too much power on hard. Fish also base on his serve and for a while I see he shoots only around 50-55% 1'st serve, even if he wins a lot from 1'st serve still he have to improve that against del Potro. In this tour he matched Falla, Spadea and Serra not hard opponents, Spadea was able to bite a set from Mardy and in every match opponents had chances to break him and used at least one. Del Potro of course also have problems to keep his serve but he seems to present much better shape right now. If he will play with such power and Fish won't improve his % for first serve, Argentinian should finish him on line and with good returns. H2h is 1:0 for Fish but it was over a year ago in times when Juan faced serious injury problems. Hard to bet, but del Potro convinced me more in Los Angeles.

Del Potro to win 2:0 in sets.
