When we look at both players, it isn't that dificult to tell who is the favourite. Indeed....it is Safin. But is 2-0 win for Safin the most likely outcome? To me it isn't. Safin is in a complete difirent form than his sister Dinara. Safin is in bad form for at least a couple of month, at the moment Marat started to struggle with his form, his sister started to pick up form and momentum. Marat played some awful tennis, he lost against the number 104 Reynolds in 3 sets back in March, lost against Jurgen Meltzer the number 85 also back in March. I think he will win today against a player who is only ranked 107th, but he will have to digg deep and will play 3 sets.
John Isner is in much better form than Safin, he played some nice tennis and is fun to see him play. Last tournement in Cincinnati Isner played in the 1st round against Andrea Stoppini (234) 7-6 6-3. In the 2nd round he played against the number 24...Igor Andreev loosing in 3 sets 6-3 6-7 5-7. As you can see he was able to pick up a set and lots of games in 2nd and 3rd. Back in March Isner played in the first round of the Miami Open against Monfils loosing in 3 sets 7-6 6-3 6-3. Again Isner was able to win the 1st set, I don't know if he will win the first one today, but if he doesn't he will probably take the 2nd if only by a tie break where he has been succesfull.
My prediction for today is that Isner will play with more motivation than Safin, and Isner will be rewarded for that by winning at least 1 set. Safin will stay unimpressive in his preformance today, and will have to try hard not to embarris himself. A final result of 7-6 4-6 4-6 will suit this game. Only 4 stake here as im not sure what Safin's motivation is to finish this one in 2 or 3 sets. But than, Safin will leave the tournement in the 2nd round with the form he is in, no doubt.
