ATP - Nikolay Davydenko v Nicolas Kiefer
I've already watched a lot of matches this week and Davydenko was until now the players who has impressed me the most. His baseline consistency against Haas was amazing, being capable of putting the ball always in play and putting a really high pace on the baseline battles. We all know how he moves well court and if he wasn't Haas to also have played very well, Davydenko would have destroyed him. His serve was also pretty effective and he looked as solid as when he won Miami back in the Spring. Now he's going to face Kiefer, a player he defeated by 6-2 6-2 6-2 the only time they have faced each other on hardcourt (US Open'07).
Kiefer comes from winning two really close matches (7-5 7-6 vs Fish; 7-6 7-5 vs Youzhny) and he must enter this match with confidence. However he doesn't move as well as he used to move in the late 90's and that will hurt him when Davydenko will start firing rockets from both wings in the baseline on a really high pace. That was exactly the reason why Davydenko destroyed him in the US Open last season and only a slow surface like the one in Hamburg was able to help Kiefer to make that Davydenko's edge on the baseline disappear and give Kiefer the win on clay. On hardcourt, things will be different and even though Kiefer has been serving well, Davydenko is a fantastic returner and there is no way Kiefer will fire a lot of aces today. Davydenko seems to be back on track and he is going to have a comfortable win in here today. Take Davydenko minus the games.
