ATP - Jose Acasuso v Gilles Simon
Most of the times when someone is on a roll, everybody loves to back him. The problem is that all runs come to an end, especially when it involves a lot of matches in a short span. A run is characterized by winning a lot of matches, reach the highest point and then start downfalling again. And for Simon the highest point of his climb happened yesterday, when he defeated the world number one, after trailing 1-0 in sets and then being down a break twice in the third set. It was the most important moment of Simon's career and it happened last night. Obviously he was massively harassed by interviews, photos, autographs, etc... Then in the middle of all this excitement, certainly he didn't sleep well last night. Obviously Simon won't be ready to play today so early in the morning, a little bit more than 12 hours after the career defining moment. Even though Simon may not be physically tired, he will be mentally tired for sure. His game desperately needs him to be focused at 100% and as much confidence a win against Federer may have given to him, it has given him responsibility and everybody's eyes on him, something he isn't ready to have in such a short span of him since his big win. That's why most players have a tremendous letdown after having the biggest win of their career the day before.
On the other side, Jose Acasuso is having a great week, showing once again that when he wants to play well, he can do it on fast surfaces too. He has came back from two breaks in the 3rd set in the first round and a break in the 3rd set in the second round, showing that he is fighting a lot this week and that he has come to Toronto not to get a pay check, as a lot of times it happens with him, but to win as many matches he can. This is his second presence in Toronto and he reached quarter finals in here in 2006, with wins over Tommy Robredo and Julien Benneteau, two players with similar styles of Simon. The Argentinian player has been progressing in this tournament with a very low-profile and he will enter the court 100% focused on this match, even though his win over Fernando Gonzalez yesterday was also a very good win, but obviously not at the same level of Simon's level. I expect Simon to commit more errors today than in any match in the past two weeks and not being able to be 100% focused, as he was on his previous matches. Acasuso is tremendously underrated on hardcourt and he can actually be a major forced when he wants, as he showed on his fourth round presence in Miami this season. Take Acasuso plus the games in here.
