ATP - David Ferrer v Robby Ginepri
Another interesting match opening the day on the centre court. David Ferrer has made in breakthrough on this part of the season in 2007 and he has shown that his fighting spirit and his fantastic movement on court and defensive game aren't the only weapons he has. Since he started to be more aggressive on his forehand and not being afraid of sometimes finishing the points in the net, he has become one of the best player in the world in all surfaces and not just on clay. He begins his Summer hardcourt campaign against Robby Ginepri, a player who is 4-1 against him. However the last match was in 2006, where Ferrer was a player struggling to stay in the Top 20 and not a comfortable Top 5 player like he is nowadays. His record on the Canadian Open may look weak (3-4), but his losses were against Nalbandian, Murray, Ferrero and Kiefer, players as good as Ferrer on hardcourt or even better than him at that time. When he had to face weaker opposition in here (Gulbis, Santoro, Larose), he had no problems in beating them. Ferrer went 10-4 on the Summer hardcourt season, so he has a lot of points to defend, which will give the necessary adrenaline to put all his fighting spirit at work.
Ginepri can be a tough opponent, but after watching his match against Mathieu, he wasn't impressive at all. Obviously he played some nice points, but in reality if it wasn't Mathieu to lose focus at some times and get broken after having comfortable leads in a couple of service games, the American player would be practising at Cincinnati right now. Ginepri had a terrible loss last week by 6-4 6-2 against Capdeville, a Latin baseliner with a good fighting spirit, who is can actually be considered a Poor Man's Ferrer. Ginepri served well against Mathieu, but Ferrer is the best returner of the world when it comes to big serves on fast surfaces and once the ball is in play, Ferrer has more weapons, more patience and more preserverance to get the edge on the baseline. Ginepri is a good player and he is actually improving again after a couple of bad seasons, however Ferrer will show up and take him down with at least one break on each set. Take Ferrer minus the games in here.
