ATP - Tomas Berdych v Jarkko Nieminen
Tomas Berdych has finally regrouped by reaching the final of Bastad two weeks ago and he has now heading to the Summer hardcourt season, hoping that he can at least come back to the Top 20 once again. He has a great game for hardcourt, with one of the best serves in the world and very powerful groundstrokes and his ability to hit well from both wings make him one of the most dangerous players in the circuit on fast surfaces. He reached quarter finals in the last edition of the Canadian Open played in Toronto in 2006, with a 6-1 3-6 6-2 win over Rafael Nadal and even though he isn't at the same level right now that he was in 2006, he has already reached semi finals of Miami this season, showing that the North American hardcourt tournaments are probably the best surface for his game.
Jarkko Nieminen showed his patriotism by playing the Davis Cup tie against Luxembourg this weekend at home and on clay. He left Finland to come to Canada Saturday night and that wasn't the best preparation for this game at all, especially when he is 0-3 against Berdych and he has lost the last five matches he has played on hardcourt. He has the weakest second serve of the Top 50, which will clearly be a target for Berdych, who can actually hit a good number of return winners and that's one of the things which most make Nieminen struggle against the Czech player. Berdych is 18-6 on his last 24 matches against left handers outside clay, which shows how Nieminen is really a perfect matchup for him. Berdych has all the factors on his side to win this one easily. He prepared this tournament with time, while Nieminen was three days ago playing on his home country on clay. Berdych has a big serve and powerful strokes, while Nieminen's second serve (and even his first sometimes) can easily be attacked. Berdych has the edge on the head to head, with three easy wins over his today's opponent. The game spread isn't that big and Berdych should get an easy win today against Nieminen. Take Berdych minus the games in here. DOUBLE DIME PLAY.
