ATP - Gilles Simon v Donald Young
The reason for the game spread being so short is just one: a possible letdown for Simon. The French player has won Indianapolis last week, with great wins over Haas, Querrey and Tursunov and the bookies are feeling that he may not be capable of continuing his run today. That could happen, but for that to happen his opponent had to be any good, which isn't the case today. Simon has been in a roll since the grass season started, by reaching quarter finals in Nottingham, third round in Wimbledon and winning Indianapolis, showing that he may not have the prettiest game of the circuit, but his "boring" game is extremely effective and can make mentally weak players commit a lot of errors against him. Donald Young completely fits in these kind of players who can't handle Simon's defensive game.
Young was defeated by Simon in Nottingham last month by 6-1 6-4, in a match where was evident that Young doesn't have the mental ability to be a good player in the ATP circuit at least for now. He is capable of playing some good points, but his inconsistence is so ridiculous that a player like Simon, who takes every chance he has to get the edge of the match for his side, doesn't have any problems in defeating him. Young's results in the qualifying may seem impressive, but the best player he had to face was Go Soeda. The American player is currently 1-7 on his last 8 matches at ATP level and last week he was easily defeated by Vince Spadea in the first round of Indianapolis by 6-2 6-4. Simon is now a confident player and he is one of the most consistent players in the circuit and one of the players with less chances of suffering a letdown. Tiredness could be an issue also, but Simon is one of the fittest players in the circuit. Young should suffer the same fate he had in Nottingham against Simon. Take Simon minus the games in here.
