WTA - Akgul Amanmuradova v Marion Bartoli
And we can't talk about confidence crisis without talking about Bartoli. Even before Wimbledon, she had already stated that she needed a break from tennis and that she was injured and couldn't get concentrated on her matches. The truth is that she got kicked out of Wimbledon in the third round where she was the defending finalist by Bethanie Mattek by 6-4 6-1, in a match Bartoli was the clear favorite. Now she comes to Stanford even with less confidence than she had before and she will face a very dangerous opponent. Also Bartoli has never done well in Stanford, having lost in the first match she played in here in the past two editions of the tournament against Sybille Bammer and Lilia Osterloh. Bartoli is struggling and without confidence, her weak movement is more exposed, while her consistency on her game simply disappears.
Akgul Amanmuradova is one of the tallest players in the circuit and also one of the best servers and most powerful players in the WTA. She can play very well on hardcourt and she uses to keep things really close when she faces good players, especially on hardcourt. Akgul rarely gets trashed, due to her great serve and her powerful strokes will easily attack Bartoli's weak second serve. She is a bad matchup for the French player, who struggles against powerful players, as she can't overpower her opponents and without her plan A working, Bartoli while lacking confidence won't be mentally strong enough to execute correctly a plan B today. The French player may win, but the handicap on Akgul is good and it can easily be covered in here. Take Akgul plus the games.
