ATP - Benjamin Becker v Kristian Pless
The match that opens the main draw of this tournament is expected to be close. But it may not be as close as most people may think it will be. These two players were last week in Newport and both were eliminated in the first round of the tournament, but in complete opposite ways. Benjamin Becker lost against the grass court specialist Aisam Qureshi by 7:5 7:6, in a match where he served well (14 aces; winning 86% of the points played on his first serve). He lost due to not being able to take advantage of some opportunities he had, but we can't really consider this performance as a really bad one. The same can't be said about Pless's performance. He served 22 double faults during the whole game and got broken 8 times during the match. For someone who relies most of his game on serve, this shows how pathetic his performance was. Can he bounce back so quickly after such a terrible performance? That would be possible if he had an easy match today, which isn't the case. He is 2-12 in his last 14 matches at ATP level, which shows how he can't perform well at a big stage as this one. Actually Pless is 0-7 on ATP tournaments played on hardcourt in the past 18 months. He is talented, but mentally very weak and when he is on a bad phase like this one, he struggles to bounce back quickly and the bounce back will only happen on a challenger against a weak player, not on an ATP tournament against a good hardcourt player like Becker.
The truth is that even though Benjamin Becker isn't having a great season, he always steps it up on the Summer hardcourt season in the United States. Even though he is German, he is based on the United States for a while now. He is actually a former NCAA champion and his game is perfect for hardcourt. He has a great serve and powerful ground strokes and he can return reasonably well, especially the second serves of his opponents, being capable of executing some return winners just based on his powerful ground strokes. With Pless struggling to put his first serve into the court, Becker will have tons of chances to attack Pless's second serve, which will also cause problems to Pless second serve, which will make him serve a good number of double faults. With Pless being a weak returner, if Becker serves well just like he has been doing since the grass season began, he shouldn't be broken today. With two players coming with different thoughts to this game, expect Becker to rely on his great serve and Pless's service problems to easily advance to the second round in here. Take Becker minus the games.
