WTA - Serena Williams v V. Williams
I could stay in here almost forever talking how great both players can play on grass. But I don't think that is necessary. Serena is a two time champion in here, while Venus is a four time champion of Wimbledon. Both didn't drop a single set until this final. Both are the best two grass courters in the circuit. Period. Try to know who is better on grass is simply a lost of time and the two are almost perfect on the surface, as they have shown during this tournament. So, with two amazing grass courters, it won't be the ability which will decide the winner in here. It will be the mental toughness and the desire to win the title which will decide a match which promises to be close.
The numbers don't lie. Serena is 8-7 against her sister Venus and she has won 7 of the last 9 matches between these two players. Also they have faced each other on Grand Slam finals in six occasions. Serena lost the first one in the US Open final of 2001. But then she has defeated her sister in Grand Slam finals five times in a row, showing her mental edge over her sister. Let's face it. It's not easy to play a Grand Slam final, especially when your opponent is your own sister. Some players can deal with it better than others and Serena loves to play her older sister, while Venus struggles more in facing her younger sister. This was clear in most than one occasion, but maybe the best one was in the final of Wimbledon in 2003, where Venus just won less six points than Serena the whole match, but she lost by 4-6 6-4 6-2, showing how many chances she wasted during the match. Already in 2008, Serena defeated Venus in Bangalore (hardcourt) by 6-3 3-6 7-6, showing once again her mental edge over her sister, by winning the tie-break of the decisive third set.
Besides this mental edge, Serena is also being more consistent in the last matches than her sister. The fact that Serena just averaged 9 unforced errors per match in the second week of this tournament, shows how Serena is stepping it up and she is hungry to get the title in here. Venus is the defending champion and she averaged 17.6 unforced errors per game in the second week. Also in the serving department, Serena is better right now. In the second week, Serena has been always winning more than 82% of the points played on her first serve, with her first serve % being in the mid 70's. Venus is struggling more, winning "just" 75% of the points played on her first serve and putting 63% of her first serves in. The previous matches between the two sisters have shown that both players literally destroy the points played on the second serve of her opponent and it's extremely rare to see one of the Williams sisters winning more than 50% of the points played on her second serve against the other sister.
Even though the match will be close, as both can play extremely well on grass, Serena has shown in the past that she has Venus' number, especially on high pressure moments, like a Grand Slam final. With Serena committing less errors and serving better, she has two more edges to combine with her mental edge. Venus has won Wimbledon last season, while Serena doesn't win a Grand Slam final since the Australian Open in 2007. Serena wants it badly and she is 8-2 on Grand Slam finals, while Venus is just 6-6. This will be close, but Serena wants this more and she will end up lifting the trophy. Take Serena to win Wimbledon.
