Second semifinals match for today will feature two female players that are currently playing the best tennis in their countries. It will be a clash that might end very unexpectedly and where the underdog has very big chances of making a surprise. And that underdog will be the biggest Chinese tennis hope at the upcoming Olympics - 24-year old Jie Zheng. This girl is ranked surprisingly low on the WTA list and she dropped for about 150 places in less than a year and had a big crisis in her form, struggling between the singles and doubles for quite a while. She actually managed to win 11 doubles titles, including two at Grand Slams both in 2006, and participated in the other two GS doubles finals as well. It seems she finally started using her great doubles knowledge more, and combined with her great baseline game she quickly became a force on fast surfaces. Zheng is one extremely quick player that uses her small body in the best way possible. Her two-handed backhand is very tricky because of its great accuracy and can cause many problems to the players that are not such great runners and that rely on strength a little more.
Serena Williams is just the perfect player for her and today the difference in quality won't be so obvious. Serena made a great run here and if she and her sister both win their matches they will be the first siblings to play against each other at Wimbledon for three times in the history of the All England Club. Serena is also a great doubles player, and had even more success that her today's opponent. She played 6 times in women's doubles Grand Slam finals together with her sister Venus and won all the matches (two Wimbledon titles) and looking to win it again (just reached semis yesterday). she won 5 more doubles titles on top of that. She also had more success at the Olympics than Zheng, winning the Gold Medal for USA in doubles. They already met once, 4 years ago at Wimbledon and Williams easily won in straight sets.
But that match was played only about a year after Zheng became a pro and today, they will meet each other in different circumstances. Zheng made the biggest surprise of the Wimbledon beating the world number one Ana Ivanovic in straight sets, also winning over some more quality players and that's a result that should be respected. However, I don't think Serena will pay much respect to Zheng today and will probably underestimate her a bit which should be enough for the dangerous Chinese to make this match tight. Jie is in great form, she will give a very hard time to Serena and will make her work hard for every ball and by the time the American realizes how tough the Chinese is, one set might already be over and that should be enough for our handicap to be good.
