ATP - Marat Safin v Feliciano Lopez
If there is a quarter final match, where I don't risk to guess the winner is this one. Lopez leads the head to head by 4-1, but all of them were really close. In fact all five matches had one tie-break, which shows how hard it was to find a winner in those matches. Marat Safin is indeed playing extremely well in this tournament, but he has still struggling in some parts. He will definitely struggle with Lopez's sliced backhand and to avoid that and try to win today, he will need one thing essentially: serve well! He isn't the kind of player who serve dozens of aces, but he has a good first serve, which puts him in position to easily finish the points after two or three shots. He hits well from both wings, but that won't be good enough when in the important points, Lopez serves a bomb. Safin will need to relay mostly on his service games and he is capable of doing it. He is easily the most used player of the two in the later stages of a Grand Slam and he will need to use that experience in order not to get frustrated and not being able to hold comfortably his service games.
Feliciano Lopez has been probably until the now the best server of the tournament. He is averaging 23,3 aces per match in this tournament and he has been showing a lot of heart in very tough situations, like in the previous round where he needed to save 3 match points before defeating Baghdatis. Lopez is a weak returner and he will have to rely on his serve in order to stay in the fight for the win and if he does that, I would consider him as the favorite to take this one. I clearly see both players struggling on return serve in here, as both players will need to rely on his serve in order to stay in the match and they have showed in the past they can do it really well. In such a close match and putting face to face two players capable of playing the best and the worst in a short distance of time, I just can't see this match being decided in just three sets. Also just like every other match between these two players, I expect at least one tie-break to be played in here. This can even easily go to a 5th and decisive set, so I'll take the over in the game, as four sets with a tie-break involved should be enough for us to win.
