WTA - Dementieva v Nadia Petrova
This will be the match which will kick off the quarter finals of the ladies tournament and what a battle this promises to be. Elena Dementieva is probably being the most consistent player in the world this season. Besides Dubai, she hasn't won any major tournament, but she is always on the later stages of the big tournaments this season. That's the main reason why she has comeback to the Top 5 and why she can begin to think in getting even higher on the rankings by the end of the Summer. Grass may have never been her best surfaces, but her great movement on court, her ability to hit the ball on a consistent way and especially her major improvement on her serve made her one of the best grass courters in the world. She has been improving match by match in here and her last match where she slaughtered Shahar Peer by 6:2 6:1 has surely gave her the confidence boost she needed to approach the later stages of this tournament with confidence and playing at least close to her best.
Nadia Petrova has bounced back on the grass season from a catastrophic season and she has reached a Grand Slam quarter final for the first time since the Australian Open in 2006! Obviously this gave her confidence but this will also give her lots of nerves, especially when she is one of the most nervous players in the circuit. Even though she is a former Top 3 player, the general feeling is that she isn't as dangerous as she once was and that she can be a regular Top 20 player, but nothing more than that. She has a good serve and great powerful shots, but so does Dementieva, who moves way better than Petrova, which will give her the upperhand in the baseline rallies. Petrova is also 0-7 on her last seven matches against Top 5 players and she has a career record of 0-7 against Top 10 players on grass. This clearly shows how Petrova will struggle to beat such a world class player on grass, especially on a later stage of a Grand Slam, where she hasn't played for seasons. Dementieva is being extremely consistent this season and she has been taking all the chances she has to get some additional points and this is one of them. Take Dementieva to prevail in here.
