ATP - Marat Safin v Stanislas Wawrinka
This is clearly a question of matchup. Wawrinka has joined this season the world elite and he is now showing that he can play like a Top 10 player in every surface. The Swiss player is becoming a more consistent player, with his backhand being his biggest weapon of his complete game. He is yet to drop a set in here and by the times the rounds advance, the more confident he gets. In the last twelve months, he has easily defeated Safin twice and that's not a big surprise, as he is a terrible matchup for the Russian player. Safin struggles with his movement in the baseline and Wawrinka can control the points, waiting for the right moment to attack with his great backhand. Also he is capable of putting Safin's irregular forehand in a lot of pressure, something which makes Safin completely self destroy, which was what happened in the previous two matches between these two players.
Obviously for the public money, Safin has become again a great player for defeating Djokovic in straight sets in here, but the Serbian's performance in that game was so pathetic that almost every player in the Top 100 would have beaten him in that day. Safin doesn't grass and his game isn't suited for the surface. That's why he has never passed more than quarter finals in here, even when he was the best player in the world back in the beginning of this decade. The Russian is just 5-6 outside clay this season and unlike what most people think he hasn't been very impressive in this tournament. Actually Wawrinka has been way more impressive than him. Wawrinka may have never reached quarter finals on a Grand Slam before, but he is a very confident player who doesn't get nervous for being on a later stage of a Grand Slam. Wawrinka is having a terrific year and he is full of confidence right now. His world class backhand will be just too much for Safin, who was far from impressive on his last match against Seppi. Take Wawrinka to win in here.
