ATP - Arnaud Clement v Jurgen Melzer
Even though Clement has dropped an huge number of places recently, he has been showing why he is still considered a Top 30 player when it comes to play on grass. The French players had no problems whatsoever in taking out Benjamin Becker in straight sets in the previous round, showing that his game is suited perfect for the surface, with his movement and ability to hit well from both wings being one of the major reasons why he is in the third round in here. His performance in the second round was really amazing. He served incredibly well, winning 85% of the points played on his first serve and just committing one double fault during the whole game. Remember he hit 9 DF in his first round match against Bjorkman. Also he has been extremely consistent, committing just 11 unforced errors against Becker, showing that it will be needed a great player to take him out of this tournament.
Jurgen Melzer has now played two five sets matches in a row and he won't certainly be at 100% in here, in comparison to Clement, who has just dropped one set in this tournament so far. The Austrian defeated Ljubicic in the first round (a great matchup for him) and Levine in the round two, who has little experience at this level. Talking about experience, Melzer has never reached a Grand Slam fourth round and he has always struggled to play well in his Grand Slam third round matches. If in his four matches at this level he couldn't win a single set, in the last two the matches went to five sets, with Melzer not taking advantage of huge leads. In Wimbledon 2005, he was up 2-0 in sets against Coria, before losing by 3:6 3:6 6:2 6:2 6:4. And in Roland Garros this season against Monfils, he was up 2-1 in sets, before losing the last two sets by 6:0 6:2. I guess this says it all how Melzer mentally struggles at this level and against an experienced player like Clement, this will be fatal for him.
Clement is one of the most experienced players in the circuit and he has all the weapons to beat Melzer. He is very consistent, always obligating his opponents to hit an extra shot, something Melzer hates to do as he struggle to consistently hit the ball inside the court. Also if the match gets really close (and I can't see Melzer blowing out Clement in here), Melzer will get nervous and Clement will take advantage of it. Take Clement to win in here.
