With the remarkable news of Tiger Woods need for further surgery meaning he is out for the rest of the season, it will have given several players a real boost in their confidence that they don't have to play against Tiger in forthcoming tournaments and majors.
Tiger would have played in this tournament for sure as Buick is one of his main sponsors, so it is refreshing to see 11/1 the field again as he woudl have been a very skinny price to follow up his US open triumph on a course where he has won twicw and been placed 3 times in the last 6 years.
My main bet here is going on Jim Furyk.
Jim has been his usual model of consistency without being spectacular this year. He has had his usual fairways and greens type of game on him all season which sees him rank high up on those stats, but it is with the flat stick where he has struggled this year only just breaking into the top 100 on the putts in GIR stats.
Jim will be one of the golfers who is secretly glad that Tiger is out for the rest of the season, as he has the game and the temprement to do well at the 2 remaining majors. He doesn't mind it here either and he has surely the best course form on display here with figures of 5-2-6-6-1-10-2-16-9 in the last 8 years. Yes that's right, 1 win, 2 second places and 5 other top 10's !!
Jim is the main for Warwick Hills, and I'm having my main win bet on him this week.
My next bet is one at a massive price. Jason Gore is a typical PGA tour journeyman. He has only ever won on the Nationwide tour, and you have to have a pretty good memory for that as it was back in 2005. However his best finish in a PGA event was in this tournament last year when he finished 1 shot behind shock 300/1 winner Brian Bateman. Gore makes no bones about wanting to win a tour event, and even with a best finish of the year back at Pebble Beach where he was 9th in the Pro-Am, he has had a pretty horrible year. He comes into this tournamnet on a lowly 45th place in the Travellers last week, but even that you can get a shred of comfort from as he came to that tournament on the back of a string of missed cuts. At a massive price he is worth a small investment to see if the old grey matter will work again on a course that he clearly has an affinity with.
Lucas Glover is my final selection this week as he is coming right back into the sort of form that won him his only tour victory to date 3 years ago. He has had only 1 top 10 this year a few weeks ago at the Verzon Heritage, but he comes here on the back of some pretty solid efforts, including a 19th last wee. He is another who enjoys it here in Michigan as he has been 15th and 10th here in the last 2 years. Always looking to deliver more than he promises, Glover will look at this week as the final chance to attempt to secure that coveted Ryder Cup place now that Mr Woods will not be there.
He is a good solid driver of the ball and has found a nice touch with the putter of late too.
